Te Ara ki Rangihoua: The Way to Rangihoua by Yllwbro with five of the students wearing these shells.
In the manner of a movement of music, artworks roll by. A gallery walk- through becomes a video on reading art (or the contemporary world) as a moving image experience.
Made during the New Zealand 2020 covid lockdown (as was the music by Craig Denham), the dual language title reflects multiple readings.
Te Pūkoro o Tāne means 'Tane's pocket' which is a reference to understanding that comes from the periphery, in contrast to the commonly known New Zealand saying Tane's baskets - a reference to codified knowledge. Like many languages, proverbs in the Maori are often a manner of speaking.

On 26 March Aotearoa : New Zealand went into lockdown, meaning that all galleries were closed for an uncertain period of time. Musician, Craig Denham started his daily improvisations and inspired by this, I set about to making a video about this exhibition no one could now see.
When we speak of the world in metaphor, it is a reminder that whatever we say is a translation of the worlds around us. This exhibition of over 50 works by artists based in Aotearoa and beyond, curated by Sonja van Kerkhoff with 3rd year NorthTec year students opened again in May when Aotearoa | New Zealand came out of lockdown due to covid-19.
I attempted to evoke various ways of reading many of the works.
