A New Zealand artist based in the Netherlands + Aotearoa.

She uses diverse materials and media to produce lyrical work often with a conceptual edge.

 Installations, video installations, architectural works + outdoor sculpture by Sonja van Kerkhoff (and others). Installations are a way of incorporating the surrounding environment (from white walled galleries, to a cliff-top or public gardens) as an aspect of the work.

Moving Image   
  Interactive installations / computer works by Sonja van Kerkhoff + others. I made my first interactive work, a screen work database of images and texts for an exhibition in 1995. In 1998 I made Making Salt in Director and started working in Flash in 2001 and moved into other programmes from 2005 onwards when I began a masters in computer science. Sometimes I work with programmers with better skills on projects.

Lens based by Sonja van Kerkhoff. I bought my first SLR camera at the age of 18 (1978) when I also built a darkroom. I'd been developing my own photographs since I was 16 thanks to a trusting high school teacher. Photographic images have played a part in my art practice since about 1991.

 Performances by Sonja van Kerkhoff + others. My performance pieces are often low-key interventions with the public.

 Sculpted, built, assembled or planned by Sonja van Kerkhoff. I feel as if I've fallen into sculpture because my objects are usually small and intimate, but sometimes a story demands a more physical presence in relation to the viewer.
  
Sculpture 
    Soundscapes + sound related artworks by Sonja van Kerkhoff. Sometimes I work with musicians or use their music. I aim to create aural dissonances between 'reading sound' as a form of narrative and 'hearing' it as abstraction. An inland Soul at Sea (2003) are hung transluscent forms with a 7 minute soundscape which incorporates sounds and music by four musicians which I worked into a soundscape. Talk Back Pool (2006) is an interactive work made for two computer keyboards.

Small Objects by Sonja van Kerkhoff. In the early 1990s I began making objects and relief objects, seeking a convergence between art and familiar products. Even my one-off objects might seem manufactured.

 Text Related artworks by Sonja van Kerkhoff. A lot of my work incorporates text, sometimes in several languages such as A Tangled Tale, which bears batiked texts in Maori, English and Dutch. I also first started writing art reviews for the student university weekly in the mid-80s. Since then I have occasionally written reviews or theory related stuff.

 Painted by Sonja van Kerkhoff. I've painted since I was 15 and like drawing, often I use this as a way of working out a story or script which might end up being realised in a different medium.

 Printmaking and print related by Sonja van Kerkhoff. My first degree was in printmaking (1982) and I love the combination of the technical with the tactile.
