acrylic on canvas by Sonja van Kerkhoff 2004

artwork, copyrighted by Sonja van Kerkhoff
150 x 100 cm, originally painted in 1992,
major repainting in 2004. Private Collection, The Hague.

Being in suspension, of estrangement, or a state of (self) reflection.
When your daily routine is adjusted it can be an opportunity for self examination (observation).
The koru (Maori spiralled patterning) which both frame and are part the scene, are also like arrows, coming and going. This particular pattern is based on the hammerhead shark pattern which relates to a saying about perseverance.

"Dost thou reckon thyself only a puny form
When within thee the universe is folded?"

From a poem attributed to Iman Ali,
cited in Baha'u'llah, (The Valley of Wonderment) The Seven Valleys, p. 33
