Matariki, the Māori New Year, for me is primarily about remembrance and reflection.

One of the agreements of the New Zealand 1840 Treaty of Waitangi was to preserve and respect the Māori language as an asset for this land. When I first started to learn Māori in 1986 it was as if a light had been turned on. I understood my country, Aotearoa, much better and the spirit and interconnectedness of things made sense to me. The meanings in this bilingual work are in the flow between and through both languages. Sonja worked closely with translator Te Toroa Pohatu (Ngati Apa) to ensure that the story flows regardless of your proficiency in each language.

I first wrote this text in English in 1996 as part of the ceramic landart sculpture Memorials.

In 2017 I created these 'text pages' for the 2017-18 Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens 10 month exhibition.
