A projection of my hands moving downwards towards a glass bowl and then carrying water upwards. As the hands move upwards the image gradually darkens so the hands appear to rise into darkness.

The video image is projected onto a cloth suspended between four pillars. Each pillar is 50 cm apart so one or two people can view the image in each of the four openings.

 This is a 6 minute video edit of a performance. There are variations that indicate that this is a process rather than a mechanical repetition (the idea of a loop). This distinction is important in this work because the repeated act is to evoke a sense of transcendence rather than an re-examination or re-presentation of the physical action.

I made this piece to express my sense of the spiritual as a Bahá´í. Some Bahá´ís wash before saying their daily prayer just as Muslims do. It is not about cleaning, but more a ritual or preparation for communing with the divine. The video images are from my ´performing´ these ablutions under and towards the camera.
Ablutions (Wassing)
(= meditatieve wassing), is een videoprojectie waarin twee handen uit het donker neerdalen om water te scheppen uit een glazen kom. Deze bewegingen worden herhaaldelijk geprojecteerd op een tussen vier pilaren (50 cm uit elkaar) gespannen doek (in exposities in 1994, 1995 en 1997), maar het is een video van een actie en geen film-loop.
Er zijn veranderingen die er op wijzen dat dit een proces is, niet een werktuiglijke herhaling.

 Ik heb dit werk gemaakt om mijn gevoel van het spirituele als bahá'í te delen. Sommige Bahá'ís wassen hun handen en hun gezicht voordat ze hun dagelijkse gebeden zeggen, net zoals de moslims dat doen. Het gaat hierbij niet om schoonmaken, maar het is meer een ritueel of een voorbereiding op het communiceren met het goddelijke.
